What games does REND get inspiration from?
We get inspired by all sorts of games. Obviously the major survival games are a huge source of inspiration, but we get our ideas from everywhere. For example, the Reckoning system stemmed from playing a small game called Kingdom: New Lands
Other survival games, such as ARK or Rust don’t have a global target, and as time goes on a wipe becomes a must. We do believe it to be a master move that REND gives players a global target. What can you tell us about this? Where did the idea come from?
While we were playing other survival games, we experienced alpha tribes growing in power to the point where they just got bored and kicked over our tiny little hut. So we wanted to give a reason for gaining power. We also wanted to have the server reset progress to give everyone the experience of being on a new server often.
Why the private servers? We hate there being 2000 empty servers and a whole community dispersed. This always does happen and its very annoying.
Private servers have two main purposes: supporting private communities and supporting highly customized rulesets. Private servers will be able to set a large number of gameplay variables, allowing players to create unique experiences tailored to their specific desires. We will be working closely with our community to monitor popular rulesets, and potentially bringing official servers online to support them.
Will the private servers be only available through rent or will we be able to download the files and make our own server? The answer may be obvious but we have not seen such thing, and we couldn’t either play ourselves yet. We want to know if there’s full loot, i.e. when a player kills another can all the belongings be stolen? Will this be adjustable?
We are still finalizing this process, but the current plan is for servers to be downloaded and run directly for those who desire it. There will also be rental options for players looking for a more turnkey solution. As for looting players, currently all items on a player are dropped onto a lootable corpse upon death. This will be adjustable by custom servers.
According to the Q&A, the average time for a faction to rule a server is from 2 to 3 months. Isn’t that too long? Will there be faster servers?
Players will be able to modify variables like harvest speed, crafting speed, XP multipliers to speed up the server. The 2-3 month server time was a timeframe that we discovered while we were playing other survival games. We determined that most players play survival games for 2-3 months at a time.
What kind of rules will there be? Will the rules be modifiable on private servers?
There will be a vast amount of customizability. PvP/PvE, Reckoning frequency/difficulty/length, harvest times, XP/skill multipliers, overall/player/creature damage multipliers, player looting rules, and much more.
Will servers be moderated? On private servers will admins be able to create items to keep them for themselves or give it to other players?
We don’t have the functionality available yet, but private server admins should be able to do that.
Will REND have MODs? Will they be available on Steam Workshop?
We are exploring the possibility of releasing an SDK for the modding community. While we haven’t yet determined how and when, we fully intend to support the Rend mods, most likely through Steam Workshop.
On the future will REND be translated to other languages? For example, to Spanish?
We do intend to localize Rend, although we have not yet finalized the list of languages at this time.
Will there be any kind of incentive or prize for the players of a server winning faction? such as skins, mounts, or any other kind of items?
Yes, we’re still in the process of determining what the winning faction will receive, but most of our leanings are towards something cosmetic
Can you give us a more accurate date of for the early access?
The Early Access for Rend will launch on Steam later this year. To sign up for pre-alpha, visit www.Frostkeep.com. What plans do you have for the future?
Currently all of our focus is on bringing Rend to the community. We will be supporting the game by adding content through Early Access and beyond. Our MMO background has prepared us for maintaining Rend as an ever-expanding, living game for many years to come.
